Intuit has been gradually jacking up the price of their TurboTax software over the years. This lead me to look for alternatives. After reviewing various options I switched to H&R Block’s less expensive tax preparation software (I use the Deluxe + State version) and I haven’t regretted it. It's less expensive, just as functional, and just as easy to use. I can’t think of any reason anyone would want to use TurboTax. Just like Turbo Tax, H&R Block has various options depending on how complicated your finances are. Mine are fairly complicated and the Deluxe version handles everything fine. That said, whether it is TurboTax OR H&R Block I double check the software’s work and for both in the past have found places where a calculation will be off just a little, so do check their work and save yourself a couple of bucks (the error never would have caused a bit difference.) I stayed away from online software because given the number of hacks we are constantly hearing about I wasn't comfortable having all my financial details in the cloud.
