If you make rice a lot then you will love having a modern rice cooker. A rice cooker makes cooking rice a breast. Put rice and water in. Press a button and after it is done cooking beautiful perfectly cooked rice - no watching, no worry about burnng, no rice stuck on the bottom of the pot. In addition the slightly more expensive models have tons of very helpful convenience features like the ability to start cooking at a specific time, speed cook for white rice in just 20 minutes, the ability to leave the rice for awhile in the cooker on warm setting without getting dry, the ability to cook a whole variety of different rice styles - from white rice to brown rice, to porridge, to oatmeal - I love using this mode to cook steel cut oats which take a long time to cook. I just put the oats in at night and the next morning the oatmeal is waiting to be eaten!
I think the best value in rice cookers are Cuckoo rice cookers. They are a well established Korean company and they make highly functional rice cookers for much less than the more well known brands like Zojirushi. I have a basic Cuckoo and its worked great for our family for years.
